How to Copy the Right Twitter/X Video Link (So the Download Actually Works)
By The xfetchy team · June 1, 2026 · 4 min read
Before any downloader can do its job, it needs one thing: the right link. The wrong link is the most common reason a video download fails — and it's the easiest fix once you know what to look for.
What a valid post link looks like
A valid X post link always contains `/status/` followed by a long number:
- `https://x.com/username/status/1234567890123456789` — correct.
- `https://twitter.com/username/status/1234567890123456789` — also correct.
- `https://x.com/username` — profile page, not a post — will not work.
- `https://x.com/search?q=...` — search page — will not work.
- `https://t.co/AbCdEfGh` — shortened link — click through to see where it goes first.
How to copy the link on each device
- On iPhone or iPad (X app): open the post, tap the share icon (box with arrow), then tap Copy link.
- On Android (X app): open the post, tap the share icon, then tap Copy link to post.
- In a browser (any device): open the post so it's the only thing on the page, then copy the URL from the address bar.
- From a repost or quote tweet: tap through to the original post and copy *that* link.
Quick check before pasting
Does the link contain `/status/` and a long number? If yes, you're good. If it's a profile or search URL, fix that first.
Once you have the right link, paste it into xfetchy and the rest is automatic. If a download still fails with a valid link, see why won't my Twitter video download for every other possible cause.
We build xfetchy, a free, no-login Twitter/X video downloader, and spend our days working with X's media formats — so these guides come from hands-on experience, not guesswork.
