How xfetchy actually works
xfetchy does not "scrape" or reverse-engineer anything hidden. When you paste a post link, it reads the same public page a logged-out browser would see, and pulls out the direct media URLs that X's own content delivery network is already serving — the exact MP4, image, or audio file the platform generated when the post was published. Nothing is re-encoded, re-compressed, or routed through our own storage first. That is also why it is fast: there is no upload step, just a lookup and a redirect straight to the source.
Because there is no server-side copy, there is nothing for xfetchy to lose, leak, or sell later — the file exists only in the request that goes from X's servers to your device. If a post is deleted or an account goes private, the tool stops working for it immediately, the same as it would for anyone else browsing X while logged out.
The site also does not ask for anything it does not need. There is no login, no browser extension, no permission to read your timeline or DMs, and no app to install — just a text box for a public link. If you are downloading video, X's own player already tells you the format (MP4) and the qualities it generated; for audio-only use, the MP3 extractor strips just the sound, and the thumbnail tool grabs the still poster image if that is all you need.
A quick note on legality
Downloading a public post for your own personal use — to watch offline, archive before it disappears, or reference later — is treated the same way as recording a TV broadcast for yourself: widely accepted, not something a court or platform generally pursues. Re-uploading someone else's video as your own, selling downloaded content, or building a business on other people's footage is a different matter and is a copyright question, not a downloading one. xfetchy is a tool for saving content you already have the right to view; what you do with the file afterward is on you.
